As arrow puzzle boards grow from 3×3 to 7×7 and beyond, holding the entire board state in your mind becomes impossible. Visualization — the ability to mentally simulate several moves ahead — becomes critical. Here's how to develop it.
On a 3×3 Warm Up board, practice predicting the board state after two moves. Pick an arrow, mentally simulate its movement, then pick the next logical move. Only then actually make the moves. Were you right? The more you practice this on small boards, the more natural it becomes on larger ones.
Your working memory can hold about 4 chunks of information. Instead of tracking 12 individual arrows, group them: "these 3 edge arrows are free," "this chain of 4 must be cleared in order," "these 5 are currently blocked." Now you have 3 chunks instead of 12. This is how expert players handle large boards.
After each move, ask: "What changed?" Instead of re-scanning the entire board, focus only on cells affected by the move. The source cell became empty. The target cell (if the arrow moved rather than escaped) now has an arrow. Two cells changed — the rest of the board is identical. Train yourself to notice only these deltas.
Pick a medium-difficulty board (levels 50–80) and cover the hint buttons so you can't use them. Before making any move, write down (or say aloud) the full sequence you plan to follow. Then execute it. Compare your plan to the actual result. This exercise builds the connection between mental simulation and board reality.
For boards above a certain density, full visualization is counterproductive. Instead of trying to see 10 moves ahead (which your brain can't reliably do), use the reverse-thinking strategy. Identify the final state and work backward one step at a time. It's more systematic and less error-prone.
